Investments have always been something that people make when thinking about the long term goals – from houses, cars, to stock, it has been idolised as the way to be money smart. But did you know that some people purchase Opals as a piece of investment property?
You wouldn’t think that a piece of gemstone could increase in value. But gemstones like the Australian Black Opal are the perfect investment item. Why? Because the world’s supply of Opals are slowly declining. And when things start running out, the existing ones grow in value. It’s like the property market on the Gold Coast. There has been a greater demand for houses because a lot of people have been moving from interstate. And larger demand and/or rarity = higher costs.
We’ve met people who have shared that they’ve received Opals as an heirloom item from a relative. We’ve also met people who have come across an Opal and want to sell it.
Opals are made in nature, so of course there is a possibility that the world could run out of its supply. Some people are predicting that Black Opals may be gone in about 20-30 years. This isn’t a long time at all.
Black Opals are worth more than White Opals as well due to its rarity. Generally speaking, Australian Opals are worth more than other Opals like Ethiopian Opals.
The only thing that needs to be done if you are going to buy an Opal piece as an investment item is to check that it is genuine.

We’ve had people come into store with imitation Opals, doublets and triplets. These people wanted to sell them to us, but they ended up being disappointed to find out that their Opals weren’t worth much at all.
You can find out more about real and ‘fake’ Opals here, or you can message us on Instagram (@opalgallery.gc) or Facebook (Opal Gallery GC) or email us at info@opalgallery.com.au to find out more about keeping Opals as an investment.
