It’s a question we get asked often. Some may think that they are simply ‘rocks’; and technically, they aren’t wrong. They are rocks that can be worth $3500 AUD per carat.

So, what exactly are they and how are they different from White and Black Opals?

What is a Boulder Opal?

Boulder Opals are sedimentary ironstone or sandstone boulders that contain Opals in crevices and cracks (sometimes  referred to as ‘veins’ or ‘pockets’). They are the second most valuable type of Opals. Due to its dark body tone, they appear more vibrant in colour.

Where can they be found?

Boulder Opals are mined underground in Queensland, Australia. Most common locations in Queensland include Winton, Yowah and Quilpie as well as areas surrounding these towns. 

How do you assess the values of Boulder Opals?

The value of a Boulder Opal piece is dependent on the colours, whether it is a light (White) Opal or a dark (Black) Opal. It can also be dependent on the size.

How do you care for Boulder Opals?

Generally, Boulder Opals do not require any special care or maintenance as they are strong and resilient stones. But you should still be cautious and avoid dropping it as it may crack. If it is being worn as a piece of jewellery, it is best to avoid wearing it when doing any manual tasks such as gardening or during the use of harsh chemicals. 

What can you do with Boulder Opals?

Boulder Opals can be kept as it is as an ornament, collector’s item or as a good luck charm. They can also be turned into jewellery pieces, just like this one.
